Active condition monitoring instead of passive damage limitation

How does that work?

BeMOS transmits sound pulses. Many thousands. Every second.

Each individual sound pulse collects important information on its way across the bearing: Has a rolling element just passed by? Is there enough lubricant on the track? Does contact even occur between ball and track?

How does that work?

The generated sound propagates on the bearing ring in the form of surface acoustic waves (saw for short). These waves are influenced by their boundary conditions. Stresses in the material and adjacent media, such as those caused by passing rolling elements, change the speed and dampen the sound. Conversely, the boundary conditions can be inferred from the properties of sound transmission.

Further information can be derived from the multitude of impulses:
  • How fast does the cage rotate?
  • What load does the bearing have to withstand right now?
  • Does slippage occur?

Overload can quickly damage a bearing. Excessive tensions in the contact zone between rolling element and track cause the material to tire and lead to breakouts in tracks and rolling elements (pittings). The high pressures and temperatures that arise during rolling contact also cause the lubricant to age more quickly. You can identify an overload in the warehouse based on the characteristic values that BeMos one generates from the transmitted sound pulses.

But a load that is too low can also damage a bearing. If the load falls below a minimum load, slippage is easy. The rolling elements then no longer roll across the track but slide on it. This leads to increased friction in rolling contact and thus to damage to raceways and rolling elements. Often, such damage is detected too late. Only when the warehouse is loaded again will the advance damage result in a very short period of time. With BeMos One Do you recognize slippage and can take countermeasures during design, but also later in operation.

Based on the cage speed and the geometry of the bearing, the pressure angle can be calculated. With BeMos one, this is even so precise that the system can be used for quality assurance during warehouse production. However, knowing the pressure angle is also an advantage when operating rotating machines, such as pumps. The pressure angle can be used to determine the load that is currently acting on the bearing. In this way, you can find the optimal operating point for your machine in order to achieve the longest possible lifespan.

Detection of particle contamination and lubrication failure in transmission support bearings of wind turbines using the measurement of acoustic surface waves and machine learning"Text: “This work presents a measurement method using Surface Acoustic Waves (SAW) to detect particle contamination and oil supply failures. The SAW method offers advantages compared to traditional monitoring methods such as vibration measurements, as it is based on the propagation behavior of actively introduced SAW in the warehouse.
